the 10 worst video game remakes of recent years
10 Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD - Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC (2012)
A true reference and huge hit for the Playstation in the early 2000s, the Tony Hawk series is unfortunately one of those sagas that has failed to endure for new generations. While the recent remake of episodes 1 and 2 gave us the right to go skating in a famous witchcraft school, the previous one left a very bad memory. A mixture of the first two games released at the end of the 90s on PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast and PC, this Pro Skater HD brings with it the many bugs, those which very quickly disgust the player. So much so that the game was quickly removed from online stores, even on Steam!
9 The Bard’s Tale Remastered & Resnarkeled - PlayStation 4, PS Vita (2017)
"Ugly", "bad" or even "not fun to play"... Here are the words that we could find after a few hours of playing on this remaster which will obviously not go down in history. The only good point of this new version, which was still entitled to the honors of the PS4, which will still be supported by Sony for a good while despite the PS5, is the music... A little light for a remake, No ?
8 Tales of Phantasia - Game Boy Advance (2006) Funny story about this GameBoy Advance version of Tales of Phantasia which is the only one to have reached the Western market. And it seems more like a bad joke since nothing is wrong in this version... The dubbing is poor, the colors hurt the eyes and it almost becomes difficult to find one's way on the map as the perspective and design are terrible.
7 Super Mario 64 DS - Nintendo DS (2004) If there is a universe that perfectly illustrates the idea of success that remains despite the passage of time, it is certainly that of Mario. While a cult plumber game has just been sold for a crazy sum, the story of Mario has not always been crowned with success. A cult episode released on Nintendo 64, Super Mario was ported in the early 2000s to Nintendo's new console, the DS. But what made the title so charming, namely the joystick gaming, is unfortunately not transcribed on the portable console...
6 Silent Hill HD Collection - PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 (2012) When this Silent Hill HD Collection landed on PS3 and Xbox 360, fans of the legendary saga clearly expected to find the first three cult episodes. Small problem: number 1 is not part of this "collection". But that's not the only problem... With Konami claiming to have lost the source code of the original games, studio Hijinx had to work with unfinished versions of the games. Such a thing logically leads to a whole bunch of bugs. Worse still, the games have lost their oppressive atmosphere with, for example, the disappearance of the fog from Silent Hill 2.
5 Secret of Mana - PlayStation 4 (2018) The cult title developed and published by Square was also entitled to an HD remake where most of the work seems to have been done on the graphics more than on the rest. If the game is still a masterpiece for some on PS4, the transition to 3D has for many completely distorted the original work
4 Resident Evil 5 HD - PlayStation 4, Xbox One (2016) Upon its release, Resident Evil 5 not only received poor reviews but was also accused of racism, particularly for its vision of Africa. Not enough to cool Capcom, which opted for an HD remake on PS4 and Xbox One. If the base material wasn't great, the new version is barely better. The graphics are certainly more beautiful but the whole problem lies in the control, where the characters are even more rigid.
3 / Final Fantasy Type-0 HD - PlayStation 4, Xbox One (2015) All the subtlety of this title is found in these two letters: HD. The graphics seem to have been the only thing worked on and this is all the more problematic since we are talking about a game that was originally produced for portable consoles. Problem is, a port to PS4 or Xbox One would have required deeper work on the interaction, the interface or even the control of the characters.
2 / 10Double Dragon Neon - PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC (2012) Double Dragon Neon is one of those games that wanted to revive the fiber of retro fighting games... but a new trip back in time was obviously not a good idea. The graphics, and especially the colors, clearly appeal to the eyes and, when it's not the sight, it's the hands that suffer because of the ultra-rigid controls of the characters.
1 / Darksiders II Deathiniditive Edition - Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC (2015) The original version had rather won over critics and players, so it was logical that the Vigil Games team sought to have the same success on PS4 or Xbox One. Unfortunately for them, the Deathinitive Edition turned out to be a real hassle, with numerous bugs and other crashes. Add to that a camera that often has difficulty following the action and a very poorly balanced difficulty and the pill is even harder to swallow...
